Bruce Trail: Iroquoia

Iroquoia Heading

Ahh yes, my good old friend the Iroquoia Section. Two and a half years ago when I made the decision to start section hiking the Bruce Trail, I picked this section not because it’s particularly easy or short as it comes in at 122.9km, but because it runs through my backyard of sorts as I’m a Hamiltonian (Oskee Wee Wee, sorry).

And we’re off.

Forty Mile Creek to Fifty Rd.

Date: June 14, 2018
Distance: 9.2km in 2 hours, 34 minutes
Notes: What the fuck, man!? Are you sure you actually want to do this? The bugs are brutal, the 2km road walk in the middle of June from Quarry Rd to Woolverton sucked, are you even in good enough shape to do this? Dude…

Fifty Rd. to Devil’s Punchbowl

Date: November 12, 2018
Distance: 10.8km in 3 hours, 40 minutes
Notes: This one sucked and I need to revisit it to desuckify it. I’d like to remember it in higher regard but those gullies and leaves on wet rocks nearly broke my soul. Moving on…

Devil’s Punchbowl to Redhill Creek Trail

Date: October 12, 2018
Distance: 7.9km in 2 hours, 8 minutes
Notes: Ok… alright. I’ve done this stretch a bunch so nothing wild or crazy to report but in the context of this end-to-end business, we’re gaining a little confidence here.

Redhill Creek Trail to Wentworth Stairs

Date: October 8, 2018
Distance: 8.1km in 2 hours, 11 minutes
Notes: Being a near lifer in Hamilton I sadly hadn’t done this stretch of trail at all until here. I’ve brought great shame upon my family but I turned that shit around. Nice, nice.

Wentworth Stairs to Filman Rd. Side Trail

Date: November 30, 2018
Distance: 12.2km in 3 hours, 23 minutes
Note: Now we’re getting serious. This is the longest single stretch of trail I’ve done in one shot. Doing the bull dance. Feeling the flow. Working it, working it.

Filman Rd. Side Trail to Governor’s Rd.

Date: December 12, 2018
Distance: 11.1km in 3 hours, 29 minutes
Notes: What can be said about Dundas Valley that hasn’t been said already? No, seriously. I want to know.

Governor’s Rd. to Borer’s Falls

Date: December 17, 2018
Distance: 10.2km in 2 hours, 33 minutes
Notes: This ended up being the last stretch I did before taking the winter off to pack on like 87lbs. from the shamefulness of Christmas overindulgence. Don’t you dare judge me. Oh, and the trail was nice.

Borer’s Falls to Great Falls

Date: April 10, 2019
Distance: 11.2km in 3 hours, 57 minutes
Notes: This stretch not only kicked my ass but when I was down and out it continued to berate me and call me an asshole to my face.

Great Falls to Guelph Line

Date: May 11, 2019
Distance: 12.61km in 3 hours, 29 minutes
Notes: Being the fool that I clearly am I decided to wear a pair of brand new hiking shoes on this one which also hilariously coincided with being the single muddiest hike I’ve ever done. Those shoes are still in active service but haven’t been their original colour (grey? I think?) since then.

Guelph Line to Mount Nemo

Date: May 18, 2019
Distance: 10.81km in 3 hours, 4 minutes
Notes: Aside from the 3.7km road walk, this was a fun one. The scramble up the back of Mount Nemo was new to me. Before this I was a way smarter person who generally arrived at Mount Nemo through the front entrance off Guelph Line instead of this more labourious route like some glutton for punishment.

Mount Nemo to Calcium Pits

Date: June 3, 2019
Distance: 11.38km in 2 hours, 54 minutes
Notes: I learned an important lesson on this one: check the Bruce Trail website for trail changes. I may (or may not) have taken a small part of the trail that had been closed getting to Derry Rd. I wasn’t shot, beaten up, struck by lightning, hit by a car, hit by a truck, hit by a rickshaw, trampled by cattle, or hit in the face with a pie as a result of my mistake. The world is an imperfect place, my babies. Let’s continue, shall we?

Calcium Pits to Appleby Line at Steeles

Date: June 12, 2019
Distance: 11.44km in 3 hours, 20 minutes
Notes: Do you know what really sucks? No really, do you? Humidity + open meadows are the worst. This topic will rear its ugly head later, trust me. With that nonsense aside, this one was awesome especially when I got a little delirious at the bottom of Nassagaweya Canyon due to isolation, a little hunger, and I was hoping my cats were happy with air conditioning and enjoying whatever it is they enjoy when I’m not home.

Appleby Line at Steeles to Hilton Falls

Date: June 18, 2019
Distance: 11.8km in 2 hours, 50 minutes
Notes: Welp, I did it. This last one was bittersweet. A friend of mine passed away a couple weeks before I completed the Iroquoia Section. We had tentative plans where he was going to meet me at Hilton Falls and take me out for food and beers in celebration of this slackpacking shitshow. Cheers, Mr. Parkinson.

That’s All, Folks

If you made it to the end and didn’t throw up, get angry beyond comprehension, and found this mildly amusing I salute you.

Onward and upward.
